Some photos of the “food” section of the Pompeii exhibit at the MSI. I found this section especially fascinating because 1. I love food but also 2. People really are just gonna people. That frying pan, which I think is bronze, looks like the cast iron frying pan I cook with. Next to it is a strainer that’s actually very similar to my mesh strainer and if I could buy one like that today, I would.
That large orange terracotta bowl is two thousand years old and looks like something you could buy in a bougie home goods store today.
The last photo is recognizable to most people with a tumblr and a passing interest in history as a loaf of Roman bread – it has the classic round shape with scoring across the top and an indentation around the edge where it was baked with a cord wrapped around it. It’s a copy of course, but it’s a resin cast of an actual loaf of bread recovered from Pompeii. As a bread baker myself I spent quite a while studying it.

I appreciate the message but… what? You had no dopamine or serotonin being metabolized? And… your doctor determined this from a blood test??
Either your doctor is lying to you or you made this comic from the grave because I’m pretty sure a test like that would have to be done post mortem. And even then it would be through cell stains, not your blood. Because well… your blood shouldn’t contain neurotransmitters.
I get that this is an exaggeration for the sake of the comic, but shit like this annoys me because it contributes to the overwhelmingly misinformed idea about serotonin and dopamine that seems to be popular these days.
I googled “are there tests to determine if you’re metabolizing serotonin” and immediately got this:
It includes “Undermethylated depression,” which was found in 38 percent of patients in the study.
“The underlying concern in these cases is low activity at serotonin receptors, apparently due to rapid reabsorption after serotonin is released into a synapse.
”‘It’s not serotonin deficiency, but an inability to keep serotonin in the synapse long enough’“ to synthesize it.
All the types listed in that article “can easily be diagnosed with blood or urine tests.”
I think the doctor here meant synthesized, not metabolized.
Serotonin is metabolized in the kidneys so I’m guessing you could test metabolization with a urine test.
But the main concern around depression seems to be how it’s synthesized. Like in this study:

oh my god are you saying a doctor was right and a random tumblr stoner was in fact incorrect and accused someone of lying just bc they couldn’t remember the exact uncommon medical terminology their doctor used??? I CANT BELIEVE THIS……..
